Center of Engagement

The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD)

has been selected and is serving the NACCE community as the National Center of Engagement: Arts, Creativity and Entrepreneurship.  MCCCD is a 10 college system in Arizona: the Maricopa Community Colleges ignite talent, transform lives, and enrich communities through teaching, learning, and service.

In this role, district leaders from across roles in MCCCD are sharing ideas, tools and inspiration to assist you with leveraging resources to better serve students, our colleagues and our communities.  The arts and creativity are pathways to entrepreneurial behaviors (i.e., entrepreneurial mindset in action).

MakerSpace

What is an example of how your district makerspaces serve students, employees and communities through the infusion of entrepreneurial mindset in making experiences?

The Maricopa Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI) and Phoenix Forge (makerspace powered by GateWay Community College)  have partnered to offer First Fridays where students, employees and   community members are invited to experience an innovative and entrepreneurial skill combined with a maker experience. For example,  participants learned about Traditional and Emergent Planning (Sada) in   addition to building a music box with a customized tune.

Innovation

How are you connecting innovation, entrepreneurship and futurist thinking as colleges navigate the uncertainty and ambiguity of the 21st century?

Dr. Amy Diaz, President of GateWay Community College and NACCE Board Member, in partnership with Dr. Liz Csikar, Division Chair at Mesa Community College, invited employees from across ten colleges, disciplines and departments to engage in a maker experience designing the classroom of the future. This activity built relationships and included many opportunities to imagine and discover new approaches to teaching and learning.

Connection

How are you breaking down traditional silos of higher education by connecting people and leveraging resources throughout your college system?

Through a long standing partnership between MCCCD and University of Guanajuato in Mexico, college faculty from across disciplines learned about alebrijes and Mexican folk art through a guided arts and creativity experience with paper mache. As faculty engaged in the activity, they discussed how their learning could be utilized to leverage resources and offer inspiring learning experiences in their classes and co-curricular activities.

Opportunity

What is an example of an opportunity that your colleges gained through membership in NACCE?

Faculty of MCCCD learned about SolveCC through membership in NACCE leading to an opportunity for students to imagine the Future of Life and submit their ideas via video. SolveCC offers a platform and support for students, employees and community members to engage in customized challenges where silo’d programs such as Civic Engagement, Service Learning, Student Research, The Arts and Entrepreneurship can be connected or integrated for scaling.
